TEDxNicosia is the very first independently organised TEDx event in Cyprus since 2011, and the BLEND team has been part of the organising team from day one. We have been responsible for the overall Art Direction of each event. In 2014 TEDxNicosia returned with a very creative and wide-open theme, Perspectives.
In an endeavour to bring to the stage ideas, which are engrossed in the areas of travel, life, science and culture, TEDxNicosia’s challenge was to explore different Perspectives. Perspectives of people who have always seen things differently, who changed gears, who follow the little voice inside of them. With no right or wrong perspective, what’s important is to keep an open spirit and initiate a dialogue of respect regardless of the different points of view.
Our challenge was to come up with the overall Branding and Art Direction of the event, reflecting the themes’ message and point of view in a creatively visual way. Needless to say that our work is always consistent with the TEDx global design guidelines. From logo and print designs to a new website and social media management, we covered every creative need of the event. The work we delivered included stage visuals, props, team presentation, and a video trailer too.

When creating and developing a brand for a TEDx event there are always strict guidelines that need to be adhered by TED global. Even though we established the main brand of TEDxNicosia since 2011, for each annual event we create a fresh associated visual brand to support each year’s theme. For ‘Perspectives’ we kept the logo very simple, yet we enhanced it with a strong contrast and dynamic visuals. We kept the typography and colours in-line with the main brand. But we additionally incorporated details such as distorted graphics and typographic elements and shapes with depth, to present the different perspective feel to the brand. Moreover, we applied our designs across all online and offline marketing materials related to the event. From flyers, posters, t-shirts, name-tags to bags, and banners.
We used the 2014 event as an opportunity to re-invent, re-design & re-develop the main website of TEDxNicosia to a more creative future-proof approach. We deliberately made the core design and layout flexible to easily accommodate future theme branding and content. Yet, it still remains consistent with the main TEDxNicosia brand. Likewise, the new structure is flexible to archive old events and support new ones without much hustle. We are happy that the overall design is modern, responsive and engaging with strong use of colour, big photography and video.
Being Online Marketing experts we consistently support the TEDxNicosia team with management, visuals and campaign ideas for the promotion of each annual event via their social media channels. We followed the specific guidelines of TED. However, given our extensive experience and involvement in the TEDx events as always we supported the team with all their needs. Besides teaser visuals, behind-the-scenes photo-shoots and promoted ad campaigns, we also created a social buzz around the 2014 theme. We presented quotes, views and messages related to ‘Perspectives’ from team members and past speakers of TEDxNicosia. This initiated a strong dialogue within the community preparing them for the actual event date.
As with every main TEDxNicosia event, we create a promotional video to promote each year’s theme online and on TV. The video is additionally used during the event where each speaker is also recorded. Our challenge was to come up with something that was short, simple and without the use of any real video footage, but still deliver the theme’s brand feel. Our talented team took this into account while developing the initial brand designs. So every supporting graphic we created works in a flat 2Dimensional design and was flexible enough to work as a moving graphic in a 3Dimensional moving space. The outcome was a simple video promo that only teases the brand and theme enough to drive visitors to the main TEDxNicosia website for all the related info on the event.
The beauty of being part of a TEDx event is the satisfaction we feel when the organisation phase comes together the last few days before the event among an active and passionate team environment. Our role for the Art Direction of the event is to make sure that everything occurring on the stage, in front of the stage and even behind the stage, remains consistent with the direction established during the promotional phase. This even includes the presentation graphics on the stage, the look of the lobby area, presentation of team members, and stage props. It even includes creative side elements such as white boards for audience to stick or write their own Perspectives. The end result was one of the most successful TEDx events in Cyprus with an engaging experience that was very well-received by the audience and media.
